The Challenger 3 Tank Has a New Problem
The British Army continues its sad decline from a world-spanning imperial military into a tiny force that can barely achieve regional dominance.
From manpower shortages to procurement issues, the British Armed Forces are struggling, to say the least.
As the British send their older (but iconic) Challenger 2 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) to Ukraine, London makes way for the new Challenger 3 MBTs.
The New System
Britain’s new Challenger 3 is supposed to keep Britain competitive in the heavy-armor class of weapons well into the 2040s.
Too bad for them that what should be an easy fix for the new tank — a turret power traverse gearbox that is glitching — has become an enduring nightmare for the procurement specialists at the Ministry of Defense (MOD).
The MOD argues that the media investigations are dealing in worst-case scenarios.
Britain’s military leadership acknowledges the problem but insists the MOD’s work on the Challenger 3 will not be so affected that it’ll be delayed and costs will increase.
Meanwhile, industry insiders keep claiming the problem is major, while the British government keeps downplaying it to the point that taxpayers should be worried.
Someone is wrong.

Given the British government’s terrible experience with procurement in the last several decades, it is likely that the Pollyanna-ish assessments being proffered by ambivalent ministers and their staff are wrong.
Perhaps the British taxpayer will get lucky and avoid the worst-case scenario.
At the same time, though, the British military must prepare for a delay in deploying the Challenger-3 (Britain purchased an order of 148 Challenger-3s from RBSL).
The fact that Challenger 3 is not an entirely new tank but an augmentation of the previous, successful Challenger 2 is likely the culprit of the problem.
That’s because the Challenger 3 incorporates newer systems, better armor, and more advanced gear (such as the new turrets).
Thus, many of the subsystems supporting the Challenger 3 are from the Challenger 2, and if they’re not designed for the increased load, such as the turret power traverse gearbox, then the whole thing goes kaput.
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Back in May 2021, the MOD awarded RBSL a contract worth 800 million pounds for 148 Challenger 3 units. Factoring in whole-of-life costs, though, that number comes to nearly two billion pounds.
In March 2022, the MOD announced a separate £ 25 million contract with Pearson Engineering in Newcastle for turret structures, creating 285 new jobs in the region.
The original RBSL contract created 200 jobs and another 450 indirectly through the broader British supply chain.
RBSL then received around £ 40 million in investment for its manufacturing facility in Telford.
But the gearbox issue afflicting the Challenger 3 is particularly troubling because that new turret developed by Pearson at Newcastle is the entire purpose of the British Army’s upgrade from the older Challenger 2 to the Challenger 3.
The Challenger 3 is a 66-metric-ton tank that carries an entirely new turret sporting Rheinmetall’s 120mm L55A1 smoothbore cannon (which replaced the Challenger 2’s legendary 120mm L30A1 rifled gun).
Pearson’s new turret reportedly has an elevation range of -9 degrees to +20 degrees and provides a 360-degree traverse.
A crew of four operates this system, which measures 11.5 meters long, 3.5 meters wide, and 2.5 meters high.
Compared to the previous Challenger-2 MBT, though, the Challenger 3 is a power hog with greater levels of armor.

Thus, the old Challenger 2 gearbox will not work well on the new MBT.
As a result, that massive investment by British taxpayers becomes useless because of this oversight.
Beginning in September 2025, the Challenger 3 underwent initial mobility tests covering around 490 miles of road and other cross-country driving.
Delays Could Kill the Program
But the original date for Initial Operating Capability was set for 2027, with all 148 units of the new Challenger 3s being put into service by the end of 2030.
The emerging technical complications, however, created a bevy of problems for that timeline.
If the gearbox can be fixed without major redesign (that’s what the MOD thinks), then the timetable can be met.
But if the industry insiders who are pessimistic about a simple fix to this gearbox issue are correct, the Initial Operating Capability date moves to 2029 — or later.
That would then compress the time available to build, test, and accept the remaining vehicles before that 2030 deadline.
The British Army would also have to rely longer on its aging Challenger 2s, which will have outlived their original service lives by the time its successor hit the battlefield.
The Challenger-3 fleet of 148 tanks is likely to be delayed.
Cost complications are also likely.
Behind that force-in-waiting sits a much smaller, older tank force, meaning that if Britain found itself in a serious geopolitical crisis, it might be unable to enjoy battlefield success as it once did because of these industrial woes.
It is hard to believe that a century ago, the British military was the most powerful in the world. My, how the mighty have fallen.
