US election live updates: Nancy Pelosi endorses Kamala Harris after VP’s first public appearance since Biden exit
In just 24 hours since being endorsed by President Joe Biden as he steps away from his re-election campaign, Kamala Harris’s campaign has raised a record-breaking $81m.
According to the newly-rebranded Harris for President campaign, that eye-popping sum “reflects money raised across the campaign, Democratic National Committee, and joint fundraising committees,” and includes 888,000 grassroots donors, a full 60 per cent of whom gave for the first time this cycle.
Several of the party’s top bankrollers had threatened to withdraw funding in recent weeks over concerns about the ailing Biden’s ability to compete against Donald Trump following his disastrous debate performance last month.
Top Democrats from the Clintons to Nancy Pelosi raced to join the president in endorsing his vice president as their party’s new 2024 presidential nominee after Biden dramatically announced on Sunday he would no longer be pursuing a second term in the White House.
He wrote in a statement: “I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term.”

Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro doesn’t deny Harris running mate discussions
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro on Monday did not deny that he has spoken with Vice President Kamala Harris about serving as her running mate if she secures the Democratic nomination for president.
He also did not say he would turn down the role if she offered it to him.
Shapiro spoke at a news conference here to announce more than $300 million in Environmental Protection Agency grants to the area, but he was peppered with questions about potentially serving as Harris’ vice president.
Pressed repeatedly, Shapiro said that their conversations were focused on defeating former President Donald Trump and that Harris will need to pick someone she’s comfortable governing with to serve on her ticket.
