Trump news today: Ex-president reveals Melania’s reaction to hush money trial verdict

President Joe Biden calls Donald Trump’s claims of a rigged trial ‘reckless’

Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee and now convicted felon, has said the guilty verdict against him at his New York hush money trial is “tougher” for his wife Melania Trump to accept that it is for him.

Speaking to Fox News on Sunday, Trump also said that while he personally would be “OK” with a jail sentence, his supporters might not accept it.

“I don’t know that the public would stand it,” he warned.

“You know, I don’t… I’m not sure the public would stand for it. I think it would be tough for the public to take,” he said. “You know, at a certain point, there’s a breaking point.”

The 45th president was convicted on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records by a Manhattan jury on Thursday over his part an election conspiracy that involved covering up a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, the adult film star whose story of an affair threatened to derail his 2016 presidential campaign.

Trump will be sentenced on July 11, just four days before the Republican National Convention, where he is expected to formally accept the nomination to take on Joe Biden in November.

The British conservative loudmouth called the jury’s verdict on Trump “a sad, shameful and ridiculous day for America”, earning himself a roasting on social media over the histrionics.

Hillary Clinton sells ‘She was right’ merchandise after Donald Trump guilty verdict

Hillary Clinton celebrated Donald Trump’s guilty verdict by announcing she will be selling new “She was right” merchandise. Mrs Clinton, the Democrat who ran against Trump in 2016, announced new merchandise after the verdict on Thursday (30 May). She posted a photograph to her Instagram account of a mug with a cartoon image of herself drinking a cup of tea with the text: “Turns out she was right about everything.” A New York jury found Trump guilty of falsifying business records in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, who said the two had sex. Trump insisted he was a “very innocent man” and claimed without evidence the trial was “rigged”.

Trump allies signal they’re declaring war against Republican candidate

Republican Senate candidate Larry Hogan has invited a world of pain down upon himself by daring to break ranks and speak out (very moderately) over the guilty verdict against Trump.

“Regardless of the result, I urge all Americans to respect the verdict and the legal process,” the ex-Maryland governor wrote on X, perfectly reasonably.

“At this dangerously divided moment in our history, all leaders – regardless of party – must not pour fuel on the fire with more toxic partisanship. We must reaffirm what has made this nation great: the rule of law.”

Chris LaCivita, Trump’s 2024 campaign manager, responded to that tweet directly by saying: “You just ended your campaign.”

Lara Trump joined the attack yesterday, giving a further flavour of what’s to come for Hogan for daring to ask Americans to respect the rule of law.

Elvis, Churchill and Jesus: The people Trump compares himself to

“Not even Mother Teresa could beat these charges,” Trump wailed outside court last week.

Quite why a nun would need to silence Stormy Daniels is beyond me but here’s a list of all the other famous figures from world history to whom the convicted felon has compared himself, not always entirely plausibly.

Former Manhattan DA does not think Trump will serve jail time

Cyrus Vance Jr, who served in the office from 2010 to 2022, expressed that opinion on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday morning.

“The president has made this a little more complicated by having been found in contempt 10 times during the court,” Vance said.

“But I think that with the proximity of the Republican Convention four days after his sentencing, and then, if he is the candidate for the Republican Party, the proximity of the election, I would be surprised that he would be sentenced to any imprisonment.”

Michelle Del Rey reports.
