For those unfamiliar, the .458 SOCOM was designed as a form, fit, function cartridge for the AR-15.  By simply swapping the upper receiver the shooter could swap between very heavy subsonic and supersonic cartridges that perform similarly to a light 45-70 Goverment but in a much smaller platform.

The cartridge was originally designed by Tromix who was contracted to build the first .458 SOCOM rifle in February 2001. The idea was sound except when it came to capacity and weight.  The heavier projectiles and oversized cases meant only 10 rounds could fit in a 30-round magazine. While rifles can still be found in this chambering, the caliber never took hold and can still be considered a wildcat.  Every once and a while someone decides it’d be a great idea to chamber a non-AR-15 pattern rifle in it, and all I have to say is; “Well, I hope they’re a reloader because ammo isn’t cheap”. At least it comes with a 308 barrel as well.
