Terrain 365 is adding an OTF to their lineup in the form of the tiny, knife law-friendly CAS auto. This is a design brought in thanks to a collaboration with Prometheus Design Werx, another project of Terrain 365 Founder Patrick Ma.
In fact, when it debuted under the PDW label, the CAS was itself a collaboration, between PDW and Darriel Caston of D Rocket Design. As promised by his shop’s space-faced, Caston’s aesthetic is a fanciful blend of utility and retro sci-fi styling. This results in unusual blade shapes, quirky deployment mechanisms, and finishing touches that toe the art knife line in terms of overall intricacy and material quality.
That being said, Caston is not averse to working creatively within more traditional design boundaries either, and that’s where the CAS sits. The spear point blade is cute and stubby, but in terms of the edge profile there’s nothing avant-garde here. “CAS” stands for “CAlifornia Special,” which means that this one adheres to the stringent requirements for legal automatic knife carry in California. Thus the blade length here is 1.9 inches, a workable size for a respectable swath of urban/suburban everyday carry chores.
Given that this is releasing under the Terrain 365 label, it’s no surprise that we have a blade here made from Terravantium. This is Terrain 365’s proprietary cobalt alloy, 100% rust proof like all offerings in this small, specialized, enthusiast-grade metallurgical category. In the role of a daily user, the corrosion resistance alone has obvious benefits, but Terravantium is no slouch in the edge retention department either.
Of course, the real star here is the OTF deployment – always a show stopper mechanism when it appears. Sliding the toggle forward shoots the blade out, and pulling back on it causes the blade to retract. That toggle has a Hyperglow button on it for added glow in the dark cool factor, and the chassis in general echoes the rustproof characteristics of the blade, with all components made from either aluminum or titanium. This 1.9 oz. knife comes with a sculpted titanium pocket clip.
