James Brand recently released the classiest – and lightest – version of their popular Carter folder yet. The new Carbon Fiber Carter takes advantage of the fancy material’s featherweight factor to make this everyday carry design even more carryable.
The Carter, believe it or not, is already five years old. It released at the end of 2019 and, thanks to its ideal EDC specs, fidget-friendly crossbar lock mechanism, and of course the signature James Brand look, made a big splash. The company says it has been the longtime bestseller in their lineup, more popular even than the Chapter, their flagship knife (which finally saw a proper sequel earlier this year in the form of the Chapter 2).
No alterations to the underlying Carter design have been made here. That means a robust, handsome 2.8-inch blade (this carbon fiber Carter does not come in the XL size), a capable and intuitive drop point. Opened with a thumb disk, the blade steel on this Carter is VG-10. Like many steels implemented in knives today, VG-10 was not originally intended for that particular role, but formulated with horticultural use in mind; that accounts for its very high stain resistance, which is a fine quality for a knife steel to have, and VG-10 is no slouch in the edge retention department either.
But of course, you came here for the handle. Two full slabs of carbon fiber, lightly rounded and with a sweeping chamfer in the finger groove. The presence of this composite whittles away a fifth of an ounce of the Carter’s weight, and taking it under the magical 3oz. mark – 2.8 oz. to be specific. The lighter weight works in perfect tandem with the deep carry pocket clip, and it’s hard to imagine most users complaining about the CF Carter’s pocket presence.
